Power of Attorney for Trademark Registration in the UAE: Requirements and Template Points
UAE Trademarks · Published 2026-09-19 · Updated · 2 min read
A power of attorney (POA) authorises a UAE-registered trademark agent to act for you before the Ministry of Economy & Tourism (MoET). It is mandatory for applicants based outside the UAE and required whenever an agent files for a UAE applicant. Most delays in foreign filings come from a POA that is missing, incomplete or not legalised.
Who needs one
Applicant
POA needed?
UAE company filing itself via UAE Pass
No
UAE company or resident using an agent
Yes – notarised in the UAE
Company or individual outside the UAE
Yes – notarised and legalised in the home country, translated into Arabic
What the POA must contain
Full legal name, legal form and address of the principal (exactly as on the trade licence or passport).
Name of the agent (person or firm) and its MoET agent registration.
Powers granted: to file, prosecute, oppose, renew, record assignments and licences, receive correspondence, and appoint substitutes. A general IP power is standard; a POA limited to "filing" cannot be used for oppositions.
Territory: United Arab Emirates.
Signature of an authorised signatory, with title, and company stamp where used.
Date. A POA can be open-ended; some applicants limit it to a term.
Notarisation and legalisation
Notarise the signature before a notary public in the country where it is signed.
Legalise through the foreign ministry of that country, then the UAE embassy or consulate there. If the country is party to the Hague Apostille Convention and the UAE accepts apostilles for the document type, an apostille can replace consular legalisation – check current practice before relying on it.
Attest at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs on arrival.
Translate into Arabic by a UAE-licensed legal translator.
Allow 2–4 weeks. Administrative Decision No. 2 of 2026 (in force 25 March 2026) gives temporary extra time to submit legalised documents after filing – ask us whether it applies, but do not plan around it.
One POA, many marks
A general POA covers all current and future filings by that principal, so one legalised document serves a whole portfolio. Keep the original; MoET may request it.
Common rejections
Principal's name differs from the licence (e.g. "Ltd" vs "Limited").
Signed by someone without visible authority (add a board resolution or director's certificate).
Legalisation chain incomplete (missing the UAE embassy step).
Translation not by a licensed translator.
POA in favour of a foreign platform rather than a UAE-registered agent.
